How do you choose between iodophor swabs and alcohol swabs?

There will inevitably be bumps and bruises in daily life; scrapes, cuts, and other traumatic injuries are also more common, especially in families with children. Many families have a small medicine box with external disinfectant swabs in case of emergency to deal with these accidents.

There are commonly used iodine swabs and alcohol swabs;

how do you choose them? Let's see what the difference is.

Disinfectants Type Features Extermination object Scope of use Principle Caution Preservation
Iodophor (povidone-iodine) Medium-acting disinfectant Low toxicity, fast-acting, good stability, low irritation Kills a variety of bacteria, spores, viruses, fungi, etc. Mucous membranes, skin (burns, cuts, frostbite, burns, contusions, abrasions, etc.) Release of iodine and bactericidal effect It is forbidden to share with the red potion (red mercury); use with caution if you are allergic to iodine. Use up within 48 hours after opening, seven days after opening in case of timely and airtight use
75% alcohol Medium-acting disinfectant Non-toxic, fast-acting, easy to volatilize Kills many kinds of microorganisms Intact skin (broken skin and mucous membranes should not be used) Causes bacterial proteins to coagulate and die Use with caution if you are allergic to alcohol, use and store away from fire Use up in time after opening

Alcohol swabs

Alcohol is a commonly used disinfectant, but too high or too low concentration can not be used for disinfection and sterilization. Too high a concentration of alcohol will form a protective film on the surface of the bacteria, preventing it from entering the bacteria and making it difficult to kill the bacteria completely; on the contrary, too low a concentration of alcohol can enter the bacteria but cannot coagulate the proteins in the bacteria, which also cannot kill the bacteria completely. Therefore, only 75% of alcohol is suitable for disinfection and sterilization, which we call medical drinking. It is generally not used on wounds with epidermal defects because of the pain caused by its irritating properties.

Iodoform is a combination of iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone in an aqueous solution to form povidone-iodine. The element iodine itself plays a bactericidal role and can be used for disinfection of skin and mucous membranes, as well as for general trauma such as burns, burns, frostbite, cuts, scrapes, and contusions. Because it dissolves in water and not alcohol, it is less irritating, but it does not penetrate grease easily, so it is not as good as alcohol for disinfection of oily scalp and other greasy parts. Unlike iodine (tincture of iodine), iodophor is less irritating to wounds and is more widely used in medical and household settings. However, it should be noted that it should not be used together with red saline (red mercury), as it will precipitate mercury iodide, which is a highly toxic substance and can lead to mercury poisoning when used in large quantities. When injecting insulin, choose 75% alcohol to disinfect the skin; because insulin is a protein, iodine will affect the activity of insulin and thus affect the absorption, which is not conducive to the management of blood sugar, while alcohol is easy to evaporate and has little effect.

Now that we know some of the differences between alcohol swabs and iodine swabs, will you use disinfectant swabs correctly? There are several points that we need to pay attention to. Firstly, the swab should be applied from the middle of the wound to all around, rotating while applying, and secondly, the used swab should not be dipped back into the medicine bottle to avoid contaminating the medicine. Finally, remind us that when the wound is a relatively large or serious situation, to go to the hospital to let the doctor deal with it.
